11th Annual St. Paddy's Day Block Party & Parade

Come join the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the Lowcountry on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm in the Olde Village of North Charleston. The 11th Annual St. Paddy’s Day Block Party & Parade promises fun for the entire family. The Block Party location is East Montague Avenue between Virginia Avenue and Jenkins Avenue.

The celebration will feature live music across three stages, street vending and fare from Olde North Charleston restaurants, additional local food vendors & trucks, the North Charleston Artist Guild, a Kid’s Zone with jump castles, a fire truck, face painting, as well as the always favorite mechanical bull. 

Live music line-up includes:

Family Zone Stage: Charleston Hot Shots, The V-Tones and High Gravity Jazz Band.
Cheerwine Stage Lizzy Pitch, Folkgrass, The Three Dudes, The Ryan Perry Band.
Madra Rua Stage: Karl Byrne, Don Merckle & the Blacksmiths, and Wadata.

This year’s party will kick off with a parade starting at Park Place East (adjacent to East Montague Avenue and across from Park Circle Community Center) at 12:00 noon. The parade route will proceed down East Montague Avenue through the block party location to O’Hear Avenue. The parade Grand Marshalls will be Madra Rua Irish Pub owners, Robert Spencer and Stephen O’Connor, who recently celebrated the 11th anniversary of the pub’s opening. North Charleston's Mayor Keith Summey, the North Charleston High School band, The Charleston Police Pipe & Drum Band and many other local groups will also participate in the parade.

East Montague Avenue will close from Park Place East to O’Hear Avenue at 11:30 am and stay closed for the duration of the parade. East Montague will close between Virginia Avenue and Jenkins Avenue at 9:00 am for set up and remain closed until 8:00 pm.

The party, parade and parking are free to the public.

Inaugural North Charleston Harvest Festival & Block Party Set for October 26

The City of North Charleston announces the inaugural Harvest Festival and Block Party featuring live musical performances, art and craft booths, costume contests and children’s activities. The fall festivities will take place in the Olde Village of North Charleston, located on East Montague Avenue near Park Circle, on Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 6:00-10:00pm. Admission and parking are free. East Montague Avenue will close to vehicular traffic from Jenkins Avenue to Virginia Avenue at 4:00pm and remain closed for the duration of the event.

The celebration features music by The Local Honeys and performances by other local arts groups from 6:00-7:30pm; a Kid’s Zone with ghost stories by the Backporch Storytellers, a student art exhibit, craft activities, carnival games, face painting and inflatables from 6:00-8:00pm; a street market showcasing fine art and crafts by members of the North Charleston Artist Guild from 6:00-9:00pm; and a street dance with festive tunes by The V-Tones from 8:00-10:00pm. Many of the restaurants in the Olde Village will offer additional programming and food and drink specials.

Other highlights include costume contests for children, adults and pets with prizes in several categories. The contests for children and adults are free to enter and prizes will be furnished by the City of North Charleston and the Olde North Charleston Merchants Association. The pet costume contest, sponsored by The Flats at Mixson, carries a $5 entry fee. Proceeds benefit the Charleston Animal Society, who will be on hand with pets available for adoption. Participants for all contests should be prepared to line up for judging at 7:30pm.

The celebration will feature live music across three stages, bagpipe music, a mechanical bull, food vendors & trucks, corned beef and cabbage, Irish trivia, a Kid’s Zone with jump castles, face painting, local artisans, and much more. 

Live music line-up includes: Karl Byrne, Customs Four & Friends, The V-Tones, Folkgrass, Sean Austin Leonard, Michael Wolk, Don Merckle & The Blacksmiths, The Three Dudes, Maya Morill, Lizzy Pitch and WADATA.

North Charleston Arts Festival presents Annual Street Dance

Evening of music & dance to take place May 6 in Olde Village Area

The Olde Village section of East Montague Avenue in North Charleston will be transformed into a dance floor on Friday, May 6, 2011, for the North Charleston Arts Festival’s annual Olde Village and Reggae Street Dances. East Montague Avenue will be closed to traffic from O’Hear Avenue to Chateau Avenue beginning at 5:00pm and the event will take place from 6:30-10:00pm. Admission and parking are free.

Boogie down to a variety of tunes from pop, rock, R&B, jazz, and beach played by the five members of Congdon & Co. from 6:30-8:00pm. The group has shared the stage with nationally known acts such as Gary U.S. Bonds, The Drifters, The Coasters, and Eddie Floyd. The night will roll on from dance floor tunes to island vibes from 8:30-10:00pm with Da' Gullah Rootz bringing Gullah and Geechee styles together in an original mix. For the last seven years, the group has seamlessly intermingled ska, rub-a-dub, lovers rock, toasting, and dancehall flavors into the most original reggae "riddems" in music today. Enjoy a lively performance of Afro-Latino dances by Buen Aché Dance Co. during the break between street dance bands from 8:00-8:30pm.

Public Celebration for Oak Terrace Preserve Honors, May 22

North Charleston’s Oak Terrace Preserve neighborhood will be holding a block party for the general public from 11 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, May 22, at OTP’s 100 Dolphin Street. Called the "Super Terrificy, Double Fantasicy FREE For All Block Party."

The event will celebrate the community and The Sustainability Institute winning the first-ever Home Depot Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development in December 2009, and other honors such as the Charleston City Paper Reader’s Choice naming OTP the “Best New Development” in 2009 and 2010. The event features free food, live entertainment, games and kid activities, with tours of OTP and a session to meet the builders.

“We believe that the Award of Excellence and other recent honors are truly for the community,” says Elias Deeb, OTP project manager and president of Cedrus, LLC. “The award was initially presented in Washington, DC, with a news conference at City Hall in North Charleston, so this block party was a way for the entire public to celebrate spring and the community’s growing national profile.”



Deeb added that the public is invited to find out what makes Oak Terrace Preserve special, with its sense of community and sustainable building practices.
