The City of North Charleston, in partnership with area churches and businesses, will hold its 6th annual school supply giveaway on Saturday, August 17, 2013, 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Charleston Area Convention Center.
Bring your school-aged children to receive supplies for the school year. Supplies will be given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. Children must accompany their parents at the event.
It's Cool to be in School program is organized by North Charleston Police Department's Community and Police Panel.
The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) today announced the launch of the North Charleston Area Shuttle (NASH), a new route linking area hotels, restaurants, retail, as well as Charleston International Airport and entertainment venues, in North Charleston. The route will be available free of charge thanks to a partnership with City of North Charleston, Boeing and the Charleston County Aviation Authority. The service, which officially began on Sunday, June 9, will utilize hybrid buses, a first for the transit system.
“We know there is a need for more service in this area and it has been a long-term goal of the Board to bring hybrid buses to the system,” said CARTA Board Chairman Elliott Summey. “We have heard riders’ requests and have found a way to not only bring this service, but offer it for free with hybrid equipment, which is huge for our system. We appreciate the support of Boeing, the City of North Charleston and the Aviation Authority in making this all possible.”
The NASH free shuttle is the newest addition to CARTA’s services, and will run seven days a week. This route will run on International Boulevard with convenient stops at the airport, North Charleston Coliseum, Boeing, hotels, retail shops and restaurants. With 16 stops along the looped route, the shuttle will also service key points of interest including, Performing Arts Center, Tanger Outlets, SCRA Lowcountry Graduate Center, and more.
“The City of North Charleston has some of the highest ridership for several of CARTA’s routes. Residents depend on the service to get them to work, while visitors use it to travel between places to stay, visit, eat and shop – all without leaving North Charleston,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “This new service mutually benefits both groups with a positive work-live lifestyle.”
The NASH shuttle was launched at a morning press conference in North Charleston. CARTA Executive Director Christine Wilkinson led the event, welcoming area leaders, CARTA partners, CARTA Board Members, and neighboring businesses and residents, who were in attendance. Other speakers at the event included CARTA Chairman Elliott Summey, Mayor Keith Summey, Boeing South Carolina Director of Operations Willy Geary, and Aviation Authority Chairman Andrew Savage. Following remarks, speakers joined together to officially cut the ribbon on one of the hybrid buses that will service the new route.
“This shuttle service will provide a more efficient way for visitors and residents to travel in the North Charleston area, and will also provide Boeing South Carolina teammates with an environmentally-friendly way of commuting to and from places of business on the shuttle route, all without adding traffic to the roads,” said Boeing South Carolina Director of Operations Willy Geary.
“Charleston is making national lists every day and we are seeing tourism quickly increase with this exposure. It is important that we accommodate this growth with true southern hospitality,” said Aviation Authority Chairman Andrew Savage. “The NASH free shuttle demonstrates this hospitality with the bonus of hybrid buses, a great addition to our area.”

The United States Air Force Heritage Brass Quintet’s performance hosted by the City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department on March 17, 2013 at Sterett Hall Auditorium has been canceled. It has been reported to the City of North Charleston that this cancelation is due to national budget cuts. Yesterday, March 6, 2013, it was announced that travel funds were immediately suspended for all military bands, thus tours of the USAF Heritage Brass Quintet were canceled. Representatives with the USAF Heritage of America Band were apologetic to the public for this inconvenience.
The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to host a free afternoon concert by the United States Air Force Heritage Brass of the USAF Heritage of America Band at the Sterett Hall Auditorium on the former Charleston Naval Base on Sunday, March 17, at 3:00pm. The concert will feature the diverse talents of five professional Airman-musicians from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia, whose commitment to excellence has earned worldwide acclaim and military distinction. From Bach to the Beatles and patriotic favorites, Heritage Brass offers a musical experience sure to be enjoyed by all audiences.
The Heritage Brass, formed in 1973, tours the Mid-Atlantic region from South Carolina to Delaware, always leaving audiences impressed and delighted with the ensemble’s world-class musicianship and entertaining showmanship. From classical to jazz and popular music, the quintet brings its brilliant brass sound to all music genres, providing a variety of music that’s as educational as it is exciting.
These gifted musicians hold master’s degrees from several of the nation’s top music schools, including Eastman, Indiana, and Carnegie Mellon, and bachelor’s degrees from Texas University at Austin, Lynn University, Roberts Wesleyan College, and California State University, East Bay. They’ve performed with the Pittsburgh, Midland-Odessa, New World, and Virginia Symphonies. The group has also performed the National Anthem and other patriotic music at Phillies and Orioles games and NASCAR’s Dover 400. Additionally, Heritage Brass performs in a variety of other venues including concert halls, theaters, schools, museums, and hospitals, and often presents clinics at the elementary, secondary and collegiate levels. Aside from their concert tours, Heritage Brass provides patriotic music and fanfares at important military ceremonies. Recently, the quintet participated in the opening of the Fisher House at Dover Air Force Base and the merger of Naval and Air Force Bases in Charleston, South Carolina, to form Joint Base Charleston.

The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to host a free evening concert by the United States Air Force Academy Band’s Falconaires Jazz Ensemble at the Sterett Hall Auditorium on the former Charleston Naval Base on Friday, October 19, at 7:00pm. The concert will feature big band jazz under the leadership of Master Sergeant Jason Crowe.
As one of twelve Air Force jazz ensembles, the Falconaires have brought the great sounds of big band jazz to national audiences for more than 50 years. The 18 professional Airmen-musicians in the “Glenn Miller” style big band follow in a long blue line of talented Air Force Academy bandsmen who are dedicated to serving our nation and representing the young officers in training at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO. The ensemble specializes in the best of past and present by performing traditional and contemporary big band jazz. To this mix, “Falcs” members add their own compositions and fresh orchestrations. The band performs annually for more than 50,000 people at civic and military functions, public concerts, and festivals, including the International Association of Jazz Educators’ National Conference, the Music Educators National Conference’s National Convention, and Musicfest Canada. A driving force in the jazz world, the Air Force Academy Band’s Falconaires play a major role in cultivating our national heritage through America’s only indigenous musical genre, jazz.

North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey served up free breakfast at Cork Neighborhood Bistro on Friday, September 14 to benefit the Teachers' Supply Closet (TSC), but donations were accepted.
Mayor Summey began planning the fundraiser after meeting with TSC leaders over the summer about their expansion plans that serve greater North Charleston area schools. However, the event was more important than ever. The Teachers’ Supply Closet suffered extensive water damage and loss of supplies on Tuesday, August 28 when heavy rains and flooding throughout the area caused a blockage in a drain pipe which flooded the roof and subsequently the ‘Closet.’
“We have been working hard to get our facility back up and running and are so grateful to Mayor Summey and his staff for holding this event to help us recover. We look forward to meeting some new supporters!” said TSC Executive Director Deborah Hanlon.
Teachers' Supply Closet (TSC) is a non-profit organization that provides free school supplies to teachers in the Tri-County area who work at schools where 88 percent of the students are on the free or reduced lunch program. Currently 34 schools at the 88% poverty index (based on free and reduced lunch program statistics) from Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties are invited to shop.

The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, May 19, 2012 with the Annual Safe Kids Bike Rodeo and Safety Day. The Fire Museum opened its doors to the public on April 28, 2007 and since that time has hosted over 300,000 visitors.
As a thank you to the community, the North Charleston Fire Museum, in conjunction with Safe Kids Trident Area, will present a full day of family fun activities to entertain while educating to prevent accidental childhood injury. Children will receive a free new bike helmet and can take part in free jump castles, a climbing wall, music, and water games.
Guests can visit over 30 different vendors and booths, and watch vehicle extraction demonstrations by the North Charleston Fire Department and the North Charleston Police Department Bike Team. Children can also navigate their way through the bicycle obstacle course after receiving a free bike inspection and tune up. Bring your own bike or use one of the free bikes available for check out.
Attendees can cool off in the museum and enjoy free admission for the entire family. The Bike Rodeo is scheduled from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm and the Fire Museum will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with the last admission at 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey is serving up free breakfast to the public at Cork Neighborhood Bistro on Friday, March 16 from 8:00 am - 10:00 am to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Donations will be welcomed. In addition, Mayor Summey will be promoting the City’s annual St. Paddy’s Day Block Party and Parade (Saturday, March 17 from 12 noon to 8:00 pm), the biggest street party in the Lowcountry.
WTMA’s host of the Morning Buzz, Richard Todd, will broadcast live from the event and will feature interviews with prominent local figures alongside his normal political punditry.

Nine-day celebration of the arts offers something for everyone
Now in its 29th year, the North Charleston Arts Festival will take place April 29 through May 7, 2011. The nine day event is one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the state, providing thousands of residents & visitors with a fabulous array of performances, exhibitions, and activities featuring national, regional, and local artists and performers.
Organized by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, the festival strives to maintain the spirit of a community celebration with the mission of presenting a broad, multidiscipline event schedule that provides a wide range of performing, visual, media, and literary arts events for people of all ages and backgrounds. Many of the offerings are free, and those that are ticketed are moderately priced. Recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event, the North Charleston Arts Festival truly offers something for everyone.
“The Arts Festival unlocks our imagination and gives an opportunity to all residents and visitors of the City of North Charleston to participate in high quality entertainment, exhibits, and programming,” says North Charleston Mayor, Keith Summey. “It is a time of the year that we are joined by thousands throughout the Southeast to celebrate the importance of art within our world.”
The Arts Festival Main Event, held on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center and Charleston Area Convention Center, offers free admission and parking to over 40 performances from national, regional, and local performers on four themed stages: Cultural Heritage, Youth Entertainment, Bands, and General Audience. The Festival continues with over 50 events throughout the week at various locations around the City of North Charleston. An exciting array of free and ticketed events include street dances, a murder mystery dinner theatre, concerts, literary gatherings, children’s events, film screenings, theatre presentations, art workshops and demonstrations, an Art Walk, an Art & Fine Craft Co-Op, the 6th annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition, and a Grand Finale at the beautiful North Charleston Riverfront Park.
