City Gallery to feature works by some of SC’s best artists

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that works by The South Carolina Watermedia Society will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery from September 2-30, 2013. The collection of works, on loan through the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program, features the top 30 pieces from the group’s 36th annual juried exhibition. Selections were made by world renowned watercolorist, Linda Baker. A number of the works on view will be available for purchase, including the exhibit’s Best of Show, a watercolor piece titled Taking a Break by Beaufort, SC, artist Audrey Montgomery.

The South Carolina Watermedia Society is the only statewide visual arts organization in South Carolina to promote artists who work in watermedia, which includes watercolor, acrylic, gouache and casein, among others. As the state’s largest visual arts guild, their membership includes some of South Carolina’s best artists. Their annual juried exhibition, which has been presented since 1977, offers both new and established artists from around the state the opportunity to compete for prize money and to have their work exhibited in a variety of venues under the supervision of the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program. North Charleston City Gallery to exhibit works by digital photography pioneer Bill Helms

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that works by photographer Bill Helms will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery from April 1-30, 2013. The exhibition, titled FADS: Fine Art Digitals, is on loan from the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program.

South Carolinian Bill Helms (1927- 2008), is considered to be one of the pioneers of digital photography. A well respected commercial ‘food photographer’ by trade, Helms’ creative work includes transformations of personal visions and re-combinations of the world as he saw it. FADS: Fine Art Digitals features 42 photo montages and digital manipulations that range from a kind of modern impressionism to various degrees of abstract realism. They are entirely new visual experiences that fuse elements from multiple photographs to create images that exercise both the eye and the mind.

Bill Helms was probably the youngest combat photographer when he boarded the USS Yorktown in 1944. He specialized in flight deck combat photography during WWII and later attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California, where he received his Bachelor of Professional Arts Degree. In his post-military career, Helms established himself as a leader in food, interior design, and travel photography. His editorial work was featured in House Beautiful, House & Garden, Better Homes and Gardens, Metropolitan Home, the New York Times Entertaining Magazines, Los Angeles Magazine, and Los Angeles Times special sections. His book credits include the Time-Life Foods of the World series and Metropolitan Home's The New American Cuisine.

Works by Lyn Calahorrano at City Gallery in April

Works by Lyn Calahorrano will be on display at the North Charleston City Gallery during the month of April. The exhibition is on loan from the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program.

The artist's work will be on display April 2-30, 2012. A free opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, April 5, from 5:00-7:00 pm. The artists will be present and the public is invited to attend.

Inspirations: Photographs of the Lowcountry presents places and faces of South Carolina’s Lowcountry as seen through the lens of photographer Lyn Calahorrano.  Through thirty-seven wood framed photographs, this exhibition demonstrates the creative juxtapositions, skillful camera angles, and artistic views of Calahorrano’s artistic process. With photographs taken from Myrtle Beach to Hunting Island, Inspirations provides the viewer with familiar as well as out-of-the-way and unexpected images of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. 

Lyn Calahorrano is a fine arts instructor and substitute teacher for pre-school and elementary school children, specializing in music, art, and Spanish. She holds a number of awards in photography, as well as painting, and lives and works in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
