The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to announce the appointment of watercolor artist Charlynn M. Knight as Artist-in-Residence for 2013/14. The City’s Artist-in-Residence serves as a key resource for the department’s outreach programs, especially in the area of art instruction. The selected artist shares his/her unique skills, talents, and experiences by providing services to senior groups, public schools, group homes, and various other groups within the city limits of North Charleston. Charlynn will be available for visual art residencies of 12-15 hours at a minimum of two hour increments at North Charleston schools and is also available to host workshops for community groups of all ages.

Charlynn M. Knight is a professional watercolor artist and native Charlestonian. She graduated from the College of Charleston in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and continues to further her painting knowledge through workshops with national and international artists. Charlynn has worked primarily in watercolor for over 28 years and enjoys the way the medium captures the “glow” and vibrant colors and textures of her subjects. Her work depicts the beauty of the everyday, providing a relaxing escape to viewers. She has taught visual art classes and workshops in all media for children and adults since 1990, traveling to art guilds and organizations as well as offering weekly instruction locally. “As an instructor/teacher, I feel it is very important to share my knowledge and pass on the love of creating and expression through Art,” she says. “Art is an amazing tool for building self-confidence and offers freedom of expression. I look forward to sharing the many different ways Art embraces and expresses who we are in new, creative ways.”

Charlynn has received several awards for her work. She has been published in International Artist Magazine and her paintings are featured in several private and corporate collections, including the City of North Charleston’s Public Art Collection. Presently her work is available at Karen’s Korner in Mt. Pleasant and Laura Alberts Tasteful Options in Daniel Island. The North Charleston City Gallery will host an exhibition of Charlynn’s work throughout January 2014. The gallery is located within the Charleston Area Convention Center at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. School liaisons, arts teachers, and the general public are invited to meet the artist at a free gallery reception on Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 5:00-7:00pm.

Art teachers and school liaisons may initiate the request for FREE services by the Artist-in-Residence by contacting the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at (843)740-5854. Community groups are also welcome to submit requests, which will be considered on a first come first served basis. All project requests should be placed at least two weeks in advance, with residences completed by the end of May 2014.

City of North Charleston Seeking New Artist-in-Residence

Each fiscal year the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department contracts a professional visual artist to serve as the City’s Artist-in-Residence. The department is currently seeking to fill the position for 2013/14. The City’s Artist-in-Residence serves as a key resource for the department’s outreach programs, especially in the area of art instruction. The selected artist will share his/her unique skills, talents, and experiences by providing free visual art residencies, workshops, and demonstrations to public schools, recreation facilities, and community groups within the city limits of North Charleston. Local visual artists with a willingness to share their talents and an ability to work with students of all ages are invited to apply for the part-time position by Wednesday, July 17, 2013.

At the written request of art teachers and school liaisons, the Artist-in-Residence will conduct visual art residencies at North Charleston schools throughout the 2013/14 school year. Additional workshops will be coordinated at the request of community groups, as well as during the 2014 North Charleston Arts Festival. In addition, the Artist-in-Residence has the option to present an exhibition of his/her work at the North Charleston City Gallery throughout January 2014. Additional exhibition opportunities are available during the North Charleston Arts Festival in May.

Rate of pay for this part-time position is $20 an hour for up to 300 hours. Program supplies are provided. A background check is required. Interested artists should submit slides, quality photographs, or digital images of their work along with a current résumé/CV by 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Project CLUE - Communities Lighting Up with Energy Efficiency

The goal of the project is to implement a lighting initiative aimed at helping communities illuminate their porch areas, while at the same time become familiar with greener living.  Many communities are dimly lit and inviting to the criminal element.



Program Objective

• Distribute new CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs to residents.
• Officers will issue light bulbs and literature at civic club meetings and to any resident that requests the bulb.
• Contractors will donate time and supplies, free of charge, to residents requiring upgraded wiring for the CFL bulb.

Benefits to the Resident

• Four times more efficient, late 10 times longer. 50-80% less energy than incandescent.
• Uses 1/3 less energy (heat) therefore cost .02 cents daily to operate.
• CFLs give high quality light and do not flicker or hum.
• Saving electricity reduces carbon dioxide emission for pollution reduction.
• Assists financially challenged residents.
• New wiring for residents with a need supplied by professional electricians.

• Increased positive interaction with community members.
• Deterrence of the criminal element in some inviting areas.

• Increased visibility for any potential witnesses of crime.
