CALLING ALL ARTISTS & PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Entries Sought for 2014 North Charleston Arts Festival Judged Fine Art & Photography Competitions & Exhibitions

Fine artists and professional and amateur photographers ages 18 and up are invited to participate in the annual North Charleston Arts Festival Judged Fine Art and Judged Photography Competitions and Exhibitions. Entries will be on display throughout the festival, May 2-10, at the Charleston Area Convention Center Complex, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. Ribbons and cash prizes are awarded for winning entries. Complete entry instructions are available for download at NorthCharlestonArtsFest.com/apply. Entries for photography will be accepted at the Convention Center on Wednesday and Thursday, April 30 and May 1, from noon to 7:00pm. Entries for fine art will be accepted on Wednesday and Thursday, April 30 and May 1, from noon to 7:00pm, as well as Friday, May 2, from 9:00am to noon. Entry fees are $5 and $10, respectively.

Fine artists may submit work in five categories: Acrylic, Oil, Drawing/Pastel, Watercolor, and Mixed Media. Entries will compete for cash prizes totaling up to $4425. Awards are at the sole discretion of the judge, Tiffany Reed Silverman, Director of the Fine Arts program at The Citadel, the Military College of SC. As the first full-time faculty member in the fine arts in the institution’s history, Silverman teaches courses and develops all art-related lectures, programs, exhibitions, and community partnerships on campus. She has added new courses in drawing, painting, drama, and film to create the Fine Arts Minor, now the third largest minor at the school. She has curated numerous exhibitions of artwork on campus, highlighting work by regional artists and cadets. Silverman is the former Director of Education & Outreach at the Gibbes Museum of Art and has also served as an Adjunct Professor in Arts Management at the College of Charleston. She holds a BA with Honors in Art History from the College of William & Mary, a master’s degree in Art History from Williams College, and is a candidate for an MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Photographers may submit work in the Professional/Advanced division or Amateur division under the categories of Color or Monochrome. Entries will compete for cash prizes totaling up to $1450 and are judged using the Photographic Society of America Print Guidelines. Scoring is done by three competent judges in the field of photography who will score entries using the 3-9 range of scores. Each judge will evaluate each entry as a whole, considering the areas of Impact, Composition, and Technique. However, there is no specific weighting or allotment of points for each category. This system is used efficiently and effectively by many councils, at international exhibitions, and by camera clubs. It allows an adequate qualitative separation of entries while lessening the potential for a large number of the higher scoring entries having identical scores. In the event of a tie-breaker, judges will choose the winning entry.

Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each division and category, as well as Honorable Mentions for both competitions will be announced at an artist reception on Friday, May 2, from 6:00-7:00pm at the Charleston Area Convention Center. The reception is free and open to the public and will feature musical entertainment by the Hi Lo Duo and Douglas Parker. Exhibition viewing times are Saturday, May 3, 10:00am–4:00pm; Sunday, May 4, 2:00–5:00pm; Monday through Friday, May 5-9, 9:00am–5:00pm; and Saturday, May 10, 9:00am–Noon.

The North Charleston Arts Festival, scheduled May 2-10, is one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the state, providing thousands of residents & visitors with a fabulous array of nearly 200 performances, exhibitions, and activities. North Charleston City Gallery presents concurrent solo exhibits by Robert B. Reed & MaryAnn H. Goodhue

"Plastic Beach Chairs" by Robert B. Reed (L), "Corexit Dispersant Stream" by MaryAnn H. Goodhue (R)
The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that mixed media paintings by local artist, Robert B. Reed, and oil paintings by Montgomery, Alabama, based artist, MaryAnn H. Goodhue, will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery from August 1-31, 2013. The artists will host a free public reception at the gallery on Thursday, August 1, from 5:00-7:00pm.

Outlying Shores: Annotations from Abroad by Robert B. Reed
The seven seas take on a new meaning in Outlying Shores: Annotations from Abroad, featuring the beach and shoreline resolutions of seasoned painter and world traveler, Robert B. Reed. For this exhibition, the artist offers a glimpse into a lifetime of experience abroad, highlighting seaside culture and some modes of human leisure prompted by and in face of the sea. The paintings are a mixture of symbols of the Western world that emulate serenity and leisure set within an unsure continuity that act like beacons of a sea culture; steadfast as a lighthouse but amorphous as the fog that surrounds it. Although each piece depicts different localities, which may be seen through delicate nuances of light and form, as a whole, the exhibition reveals how a common attitude can be shared by inhabitants of distant shores, which is a fundamental outlook for the prosperity of any port city in strengthening external bonds and relationships. “This series reflects my curiosity and attraction to one of many aspects of sea culture, which is an integral part of my life,” Reed says. “My interests have often been to depict what for me are visually poetic features of human involvement with our oceans and coastal sea areas, a way of measuring time, but more so, a way of measuring different cultures.”

Although not a native to Charleston, Reed is an adopted son returning to one of the localities where he had spent time as a child nurturing his attraction for the sea. He was born in Key West, Florida, and has lived in many different places in the United States, growing up mainly in Hawaii and California. He spent a major part of his life traveling the world, eventually using Tuscany as his home base. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze from 1981 to 1985, receiving a Diploma in Painting from this Italian State Institute, and was accepted with a scholarship into a Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1988. During the mid-1990’s he taught courses in watercolor technique and collaborated with two private arts schools in Florence, Studio Cecil and The Florence Academy of Art. Reed’s work has received several awards and honorable mentions and has been shown in both solo and collective exhibitions in Australia, Italy, Switzerland, and throughout the United States.

Endangered by MaryAnn H. Goodhue
MaryAnn H. Goodhue’s fascination with color, pattern, and repetition are immediately evident in her work. Her bold palette, a bit irreverent and humorous, is both challenged and inspired by the Fauvism movement of the early 20th century, and influenced by painters like Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Maurice de Vlaminck. Though her body of work boasts a very diverse use of materials, subjects, and inspiration, the artist has chosen to display one particular series of paintings for her one month presentation at the City Gallery. Endangered features a collection of oil paintings inspired by the devastation to the native bird population in Goodhue’s home state of Alabama caused by the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. More than 300 species of birds live or pass through the Gulf Coast each year, including some rare and endangered species, making it one of the most important bird habitats in the world. Thousands of birds were immediately impacted by the estimated 170 million gallons of oil that flooded into the Gulf, with thousands more expected to suffer from long-term impacts such as an unbalanced food web. “As I photograph, sketch, and bring to life the struggles of these birds, I find myself enthralled with the plight of these endangered, graceful creatures,” Goodhue says. “Though the oil is no longer visible, their battle for recovery continues.”

MaryAnn H. Goodhue was born in New Jersey and currently lives and works in Montgomery, Alabama. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from Augusta State University in Georgia in 1988 and her Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1993. She taught students of all ages as an art educator for over twenty-five years, exchanging work in the classroom for full-time work in the studio in 2010. Her paintings and sculptures have been included in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions throughout the United States. Presently her work is represented by the SAC Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama.

The North Charleston City Gallery is situated in the common areas of the Charleston Area Convention Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. Parking and admission are free during regular Convention Center operating hours, 9:00am – 5:00pm daily. The gallery is staffed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday only. City of North Charleston Appoints New Artist-in-Residence

Local fiber artist, Kristy Bishop, to fill role for 2012-2013

The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to announce the appointment of contemporary fiber artist Kristy Bishop as Artist-in-Residence for 2012/13. The City’s Artist-in-Residence serves as a key resource for the department’s outreach programs, especially in the area of art instruction. The selected artist shares his/her unique skills, talents, and experiences by providing services to senior groups, public schools, group homes, and various other groups within the city limits of North Charleston. Kristy will be available for visual art residencies of 12-15 hours at a minimum of two hour increments at North Charleston schools and is also available to host workshops for community groups of all ages.

Kristy Bishop, originally from Charleston, received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting from the College of Charleston in 2008. In the spring of 2009 she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where the beauty and fragility of the Mojave desert became the primary inspiration for her paintings. It was in December of that year that Kristy began experimenting with fiber mediums, incorporating sewn and embroidered elements into her paintings. By the time she returned to Charleston in the summer of 2010, Kristy had made the transformation from painter to mixed media/fiber artist. Her most recent works are created solely from fabric, featuring hand-dyed silk that is cut, gathered, and sewn. By hand dyeing the fabric, she creates a multitude of colors that she uses as her palette for creating new work. Thousands of tiny pieces of hand-dyed silk are manipulated to create large scale abstract pieces that employ texture and color to convey and evoke a number of emotions. In March, 2012, Kristy was featured in Charleston Magazine. Her most recent works can be viewed in an exhibition titled Pinned Down, on view from August 17-28 at Stems, located at 208 Coming Street in downtown Charleston.

Art teachers and school liaisons may initiate the request for FREE services by the Artist-in-Residence by contacting the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at (843)740-5854. Community groups are also welcome to submit requests, which will be considered on a first come first served basis. All project requests should be placed at least two weeks in advance, with residences completed by the end of May, 2013.

The North Charleston City Gallery will host an exhibition of Kristy’s work throughout January, 2013. The gallery is located within the Charleston Area Convention Center at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. School liaisons, arts teachers, and the general public are invited to meet the artist at a free gallery reception on Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 5:00-7:00pm.

More information about the Artist-in-Residence program, as well as the department’s other programs, exhibits, and events, can be found on the Cultural Arts section of the City’s website at www.northcharleston.org. For more information about Kristy, visit kristybishop.com.

Ginny Versteegen & Faye Sullivan at City Gallery in September

Mt. Pleasant artists to present concurrent solo exhibitions of oils and watercolors
Works by Ginny Versteegen and Faye Sullivan will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery during the month of September.

Ginny Versteegen’s exhibit, Journeys, consists of her latest oil and watercolor paintings which encompass personal journeys, artistic journeys, as well as the artist’s geographical journeys.  Recent trips to Tuscany and Umbria have inspired many of the paintings in the exhibit.   Local excursions throughout the Lowcountry and Upstate also contribute to the theme. Versteegen’s fascination with color and light are both evident in the inspired collection of paintings.  Done “en plein air,” these works reflect the sunlit landscapes and windows of the world.

Versteegen taught art in private and public schools throughout her life.  She received a degree in Art Education through Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and continued her education in fine arts at Winthrop University, Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the University of Oviedo in Spain.  Having resided in Holland, Spain, and Brazil, her work exhibits an international flair. Her paintings have received awards in many shows locally and throughout the United States. She currently co-manages the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in downtown Charleston, is a contributing member of the I’On Guild, and previously served on the board of the Mount Pleasant Artist Guild.

The oil paintings in Faye Sullivan’s exhibit, Reflections, invite the public to experience the openness and expanse of the Lowcountry through the seascapes and landscapes which surround them.  “Water is the ultimate chameleon,” says the artist.  “It reflects the clouds, time of day, wind, sky, and all of the many things which surround it.  It is this reflective quality which is most helpful when repeating colors to unify the scene.”  Sullivan first worked in pastels because she was drawn to the softness of the medium.  She now paints with that softness using oils, choosing a smooth canvas and applying the paint thinly with soft edges.  These techniques help set a mood of peacefulness and solitude and make her work easily recognizable.

Sullivan is a graduate of East Carolina University with a BFA and MFA in Art.  She taught art for 39 years at the middle and high school level before retiring in the Lowcountry. She has won numerous art awards and her work is displayed in homes and offices throughout the country and abroad.  She currently exhibits at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in downtown Charleston and is a member of three local guilds.

Both artists’ work will be on display from September 1 – 30, 2011. The public is invited to attend a free opening reception at the gallery hosted by the artists on Thursday, September 1, from 5pm-7pm.

The North Charleston City Gallery is located in the Charleston Area Convention Center with free parking and admission during regular Convention Center operating hours 9:00am – 5:00pm, daily.  The gallery is staffed on Friday, Saturday, and Monday only.   Inquiries regarding artists or purchase information may be directed to the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at (843) 740-5854. Elizabeth Roberts McFalls & Samantha Meeker at City Gallery

Drawings and oils by Georgia based artists on
view throughout month of August.

Hamilton Hill by McFalls
Elizabeth Roberts McFalls uses historical photographs of the rural southeast as a reference and departure point for her pen and ink drawings and lithographs. The pieces in her exhibit, titled At Rest, reflect on the ideas of family, community, and heartbreak expressed in the photographs, while also confronting issues like mortality, sacrifice, and false sentimentality. “Revealing, concealing, and reinventing truths is central to my art making process,” she explains. “In my drawings and prints I question how we categorize ourselves and relate to one another through a veil of romanticized history.”

McFalls has exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions both regionally and nationally. She has also given several artist lectures at colleges and universities throughout the country. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. For more information on the artist and her work, visit www.roberts-mcfalls.com.

Also on exhibit at the gallery are works by Samantha Meeker. Her exhibition, Lovers & Fighters, features a combination of two sets of figurative oil paintings. The Lovers series addresses the idea of what men will do for women in the name of love, such as enduring great humiliation, pain, and sacrifice. The Fighters series focuses on struggle and conflict.  The pieces, which depict fighters in a ring, were created at a time when the artist was battling with many aspects of her life, including family, college, and learning to paint. “The scenes of the fighters are all representative of emotions I was feeling while undergoing this life balance,” she explains.

Watching You by Meeker
Meeker received a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2009. Her work is currently being shown in Atlanta and has recently been juried into two national exhibitions. For more information on the artist and her paintings, visit www.samanthameeker.com.

Both artists’ work will be on display from August 1-31, 2011. The gallery will host a reception on Thursday, August 4, from 5pm-7pm. The public is invited to attend.

Alan Finch & Curtis Bartone at City Gallery

Alan Finch and Curtis Bartone will be on exhibit at the
North Charleston City Gallery during the month of July.

Lay Down with the Lamb

Alan Finch will present digital photography in his exhibition titled I Wish I Was a Camera. Inspired by spontaneity, Finch’s abstract nature photographs feature extreme close-ups of natural and organic materials with manipulations executed before the photos are taken. Most of the images are of rock formations and organic materials at a remote island on Norris Lake at Norris Dam State Park and at the artist’s home in Clinton, TN.

Finch has worked as a visual artist for the past 25 years. His photography, paintings, sculpture, and performance art videos have been included in numerous national, regional, and local juried shows and invitationals, including the Positive/Negative National Exhibition. His photographs have recently been exhibited in the McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, TN, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Oak Ridge Museum of Art, and the Rose Center in Morristown, TN.

Grace
The gallery will also feature paintings, etchings, and lithographs by Savannah, GA, artist, Curtis Bartone. Bartone’s works depict human beings’ relationship to the environment. Each piece explores our fear and fascination with poisonous flora and fauna and how that contrasts with our indifference to manmade, ubiquitous, and seemingly benign toxins and hazards. “Here in Georgia, we worry about black widow and brown recluse spiders, while ignoring real threats like the toxins spewed from our factories and the pesticides and herbicides we use on the lawns where our children play,” he explains.

Bartone has exhibited and lectured throughout the US and abroad. His work is part of several public collections such as the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Grinnell College in Iowa, and the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Illinois.  He is currently a printmaking instructor for the Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Both artists’ work will be on display from July 2-31, 2011. A free reception, featuring a performance by the pop group Rabbit, will be held at the gallery on Thursday, July 7, from 5pm-7pm. The public is invited to attend.
